If you’re a Zoom user that’s unfamiliar with livestreaming, you’re halfway there. Here’s everything you need to become a pro streamer.
In order to use YouTube to stream your Zoom meeting, it is best to make a scheduled Zoom meeting and a scheduled YouTube livestream. Although it is possible "Go Live On Youtube" from within any Zoom meeting quite quickly, using scheduled meetings allows you to get all your other event details prepared in advance.
Requirements:
- A Licensed Zoom account, with livestreaming enabled.
- A verified YouTube channel. Learn more here.
- Enable livestreaming on your YouTube channel (How do I enable this?)
Note: Don’t have a verified YouTube channel? Click here to see how to use Facebook Live, Vimeo or LinkedIn Live.
Tip: If this is your first time creating a livestream, create a test stream as you read through so you can test going live when you're done.
Steps:
A. Schedule a YouTube livestream
B. Create a scheduled Zoom Meeting
C. Copy the stream link into your BuzzIt event
A. Schedule a YouTube livestream
- Go to YouTube and click on the Video Camera icon in the top right-hand corner.
2. Click on Go live (don’t worry - it won’t start a broadcast!)
3. You are now in YouTube Studio. Click on SCHEDULE STREAM
4. Click on CREATE NEW. Or reuse settings from a previous livestream.
5. Scroll through and fill in the details for your stream.
Required:
-
A title for your stream
-
Indicate if your stream is for kids or not (we recommend selecting ‘No’ for most event situations)
Tip: If you’ll be setting this stream as ‘Public,’ and want to draw additional attendees into BuzzIt, add a CTA with a link in the ‘Description’ field. Here’s a template.
Click on NEXT.
Here you can customize your stream.
Tip: Turn off the live chat. Your attendees will be chatting on BuzzIt.
Click NEXT.
Set the privacy setting to either ‘Public’ or ‘Unlisted’
- Choose ‘Public’ if maximizing reach is your primary concern
- Choose ‘Unlisted’ if privacy/exclusivity is your primary concern
- Do not choose Private: Private videos cannot be added to BuzzIt
- Learn more in YouTube’s help
Set the scheduled time for your stream. Click DONE to finish.
6. This is your livestream control page on YouTube. Keep this window open.
Tip: In the stream settings tab, scroll down to Stream latency. We recommend choosing Low Latency. The result is a 5-15 second delay between you and your audience, which allows for near real-time interactivity and high stream stability.
B. Create a scheduled Zoom Meeting
Now you’re ready to schedule and connect your Zoom meeting to YouTube.
1. Go to your Zoom web portal in a browser window (sign in at www.zoom.com).
Tip: We recommend using Zoom on a web browser instead of the desktop app because it is easier to set up the Zoom meeting and livestream configurations in the Zoom web portal.
On your Meetings page, click Schedule a Meeting.
2. Set up your meeting and click Save.
- To keep organized, make the meeting ‘Topic’ the same as your event title
- Also, set the start time to the same as your live stream start time
- There's no need to change anything else
3. Scroll to the bottom to find the Live Streaming section and click on Configure Custom Streaming Service.
4. Go to your YouTube Studio window to find your required stream information: the Stream URL, Stream key and Live streaming page URL.
Tip: You can copy this information into a word document, which is especially helpful if you want to set up multiple streams for multiple events all at once.
To get the Live streaming page URL, click the arrow button in the top right-hand corner.
Copy the video link. This is the Live streaming page URL.
Copy and paste all 3 items into the Zoom Configure Custom Streaming Service window and click Save.
5. Go to the Live Streaming tab at the bottom of the zoom manage meeting page to see your stream details. You can Edit or Delete your live stream configurations here.
Tip: You can start, end and restart the Zoom meeting before the scheduled time to preview or practice the livestream.
C. Copy the stream link into your BuzzIt event
Now you are ready to add your livestream to BuzzIt.
1. On your YouTube livestream control page, click the share button in the top right-hand corner.
Click on and open the video link.
2. The new window that opens is your livestream video page. Click on the SHARE button below the video.
Click on the Embed icon.
In the embed code window, click the COPY button on the right to copy the embed code. This is your Livestream embed code for BuzzIt.
3. In another window, go to your BuzzIt event Homepage and click the blue button in the bottom right-hand corner.
4. Click on LIVESTREAM CONFIG.
5. Click on the URL section in the Livestream Configurations window.
Paste the livestream embed code you copied from YouTube into the input box.
BuzzIt will automatically find the livestream information and show you a preview of the livestream.
Scroll down and click CONFIRM CHANGES to save your changes. Then click on CONFIRM CHANGES again to save your new livestream configurations.
6. Now click ‘Show Livestream’ to see what your livestream will look like in your BuzzIt event.
The livestream view:
D. Go live on your event day
1. Once you’re ready to start livestreaming (or want to test out the stream), go to your meetings page on the Zoom web portal and click Start this Meeting.
2. In the bottom menu bar of the meeting, click More and select Live on Custom Live Streaming Service. Expect this to take 8-12 seconds
3. After Zoom has started livestreaming, go to your Youtube stream settings page. You should be able to see the video from your meeting. When you’re all set, click GO LIVE to start the YouTube livestream. Remember to start with energy!
Heads Up: Only practice this with test events & test streams: YouTube only allows you to ‘GO LIVE’ one time for each scheduled livestream.
4. Open your BuzzIt event in another browser window to see your livestream from the attendee perspective. We recommend all on-screen participants use the HIDE LIVESTREAM option during events. This prevents audio feedback and helps them keep focused on the presentation.
Tip: Want to pause your broadcast? You can stop your Zoom livestream (without ending your YouTube livestream) at any time by clicking on the bar in the top left-hand corner of your zoom window and clicking Stop Live Stream. This stops your Zoom meeting from streaming to YouTube. It does not end your Zoom meeting, does not end your YouTube livestream, and you can restart it at any time.
To end the YouTube livestream: click END STREAM from your YouTube studio window. This does not end the Zoom meeting.
Warning: When you end a YouTube livestream it cannot be restarted.
